Hard Clad Freestanding Greenhouse
and Cold Frame Packages

File Updates May, 2001

See below for hobby sized cold
frame greenhouse structures.

Our hard clad freestanding packages make an excellent choice for the back yard, advanced hobby and acreage growers. Our reinforced arch design provides one of the strongest structures for increased snow and wind loads. These packages with the reinforced arches are rated at 35 lb. snow load capacity. The kits are very easy to assemble. All joints are slip fit design. A weekends worth of work will result in a very professional, high quality greenhouse that you'd be proud of.

These smaller freestanding packages are constructed with our series FS arches used on our commercial freestanding structures . - See in the news - . The FS arches are of gothic profile and provide additional peak and sidewall height. ( 2 feet of the sidewall both structure provide 6'-6" clear height. The additional height provides space for those with hanging crops, raising vertical vine crops and of course clearance for installing overhead mechanical equipment.

For further information on our freestanding greenhouses refer to our products and services page. Color photo's can be seen in our photo page listing below.

Options include : Ridge and sidewall vents, fan and shutter cooling, gas / propane unit heaters, and benches - contact this office for assistance.

Questions Commonly Asked About Our Freestanding Houses.

Are there other cladding types available ???

All of our freestanding houses are capable of receiving single poly, double poly ( inflated ), single wall corrugated single wall polycarbonate or 8mm twinwall polycarbonate. For those interested in only cost basis with no regard to life expectancy, cost to heat etc. single poly cladding is the cheapest way to go. For those concerned about heating costs primarily and reduced maintenance costs, consider double poly or twinwall polycarbonate. Both of these products provide exceptional R values for reduced heating costs. Double poly packages are far less costly than the 8 mm twinwall polycarbonate packages. For long term life expectancy, low maintenance and high thermal properties you should consider twinwall polycarbonate. Here's the R values for the products ... Single poly R = 1.0, single wall corrugated polycarbonate R = 0.8, 8 mm twinwall polycarbonate R =1.69, double poly R = 2 to 1.8 ( depending on installation and state of poly. ). The higher the R value ...... the less the heat loss.

Venting Options ????

On the hard clad structures ( ie clad with single wall or twinwall polycarbonate ) both sidewall and ridge vents are avialable. On soft clad structures ( ie clad in single or double poly ) both roll-up sidewalls and roof vents are avialable. For those wishing to vent and cool the structures with fans and shutters it doens't matter much about cladding type.

Cold Frame / Freestanding Buildings ????

They may look the same from the outside but there is considerable differences. First and most significant is the structural aspects. The freestanding structures are designed to provide much much more strength ( for snow load, crop load, wind load ), than cold frame structures. Cold frames can easily be identified by the single cord ( member arch design ), whereas with our freestanding houses they feature reinforced arches and arch up rights. Cold frames are designed primarily to Farm Code requirments which is 15 lb/sq. foot total load, whereas the freestanding houses ..... well we're good for a minimum 35 lbs/ sq. foot. dead load. So theres quite a difference in strength.

Secondly ... Is volume of the structure at the peak. Freestanding houses provide more heigth at the peak ( which is more volume ). This helps get the summer heat up off the crop and improves airflow circulation.

Finally .... The freestanding structures provide singnificanly more overhead clearance at the sidewalls. Typically 6'-6" just 2 feet off the sidewall.

Foundations ?????

Typically the ground sleaves can simply be pounded into the ground. ( All of our packages are provided with the ground sleave driver tool ). But if you are concerned with frost heave or live in light loose soil locations we recommend at least casting the ground sleaves into 6" round X 3 or 4 foot deep concrete piles at the door vertical framing member locations and the gable end arch locations and possibly 1/3 and 2/3 down the length of the structure.

Concrete Pads and Concrete grade Beam Sidewalls ????

No problem, just tell us at the time of purchase and we'll replace the ground sleave with flat bottom mounting plates. These plates allow you to cast in place anchor bolts that secure the plate to the slab or grade beam.

Ventilation Rates for fan and shutter cooling ????

Minimum recommendations is to size the systems as to allow one air change per minute. Contact us we are more than willing to provide our recommendations, selections and prices.

Gothic Shaped Roof Profiles

All of our sereis FS commercial structures are of gothic profile. Two main reasons for this. Addtional strength and superior snow shed and condensation control.

Typical Customer Comments after they put up their building ????

Cannot believe the strength, our old other ( brand XXX ) houses wag in the wind !!!!! Very Easy to assemble !!!! Packages arrive complete !!!! Nothing missing !!!!. With our new Omni series FS structures we sleep well at night even during high snow falls !!!! The next time we expand it'll be another Omni series FS for sure.
